Helderberg resident Willem Claassen entered his Shelby GT500e in a competition with over 300 other entries at the Tygerberg Wheels show at Panorama Primary School last weekend and walked away with the first prize for best car in the show. Willem says the car, an exact replica of the one featured in the 2000 move "Gone in 60 Seconds" starring Nicolas Cage, is the only one of its kind in South Africa. "Since seeing the movie in 2000, my biggest aim was to own one just like it" he says it took him and his car builder, Ian Viljoen, a year and a half to rebuild a vehicle he purchased for the purpose.
Unique Performance, a car building company operating in Dallas, Texas which was featured on the Discovery Channels "Rides" helped Willem with parts and advice while the car was being rebuilt. Willem would like to thank the fololowing people for helping him to complete the project: Ian Viljoen car builder and project manager, Paul Jacobsfrom Mechtec for engine building mechanical and technical advice, Micheal Feats for for body work and spray painting, Herman Visser from Hi-Q for tyres, Muffler Inn for the exhaust system, Strand Auto Electric, Master Parts Strand, Bay Trimmers & Upholsterers, Mc Carty Auto Trimmers and ABS auto body spares.
